THE SORROWFUL MYSTERIES
1- Jesus's Agony in the Garden
In great suffering
Jesus
offers his life
to the Father
to redeem sinful men,
and the disciples sleep.
Mary: He suffered willingly, and I willingly accompanied him in my thoughts and in the scenes of his passion. Too many turned away, even his followers. I pray for them as well as for the unbelievers.

A prayer: Blessed Mother, unite us with him in all our sufferings and trials. Our spirit is willing, but our flesh is so weak. May we learn to accept these special signs of his closeness to us? May we awaken from our sleep and, with all the graces we have been given, not run away.

  1. Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray". (Matt 26:36)
  2. Then he said to them, "I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me." (Matt 26:38)
  3. "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done." (Luke 22:42)
  4. Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength. (Luke 22:43)
  5. In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground. (Luke 22:44)
  6. Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, "So, could you not stay awake with me one hour? (Matt 26:40)
  7. Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." (Matt 26:41)
  8. At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though I were a bandit? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not arrest me. (Matt 26:55)
  9. But all this has taken place, so that the scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled". Then all the disciples deserted him and fled. (Matt 26:56)
  10. So the soldiers, their officer, and the Jewish police arrested Jesus and bound him. (John 18:12)
