Father John McCaffery

Fr John was born in Ayr, Scotland and joined the Franciscan Order (OFM) in 1952, and was ordained priest in 1959. His work has been in parishes, with 17 years as a parish in Edinburgh, Clevedon and Chilworth. For some years he was Hospital Chaplain in Ipswich and 10 years Prison Chaplain in Bristol and Edinburgh.

He first visited Medjugorje in 1984 and on the second day found himself in the room where the apparitions took place at that time, with Marija, Jakov, and about 15 others. He comments:

"It was an experience I can never forget; I was overcome by the awareness of love and holiness – something I had never felt before. It is something I cannot possibly describe; but there is no doubt that in made an impact on my life. At the present I’ve visited Medjugorje about 22 times and each time I feel the challenge more difficult. It is almost as if the ‘opposition’ renews its efforts to pull you down. Mary however always leads us to her Son, and we hear his words: ‘Do not be afraid. I am with you.’ Mary speaks to us, encouraging us to live her Son’s Gospel generously. She knows only too well our difficulties but reassures us of the strength and assistance Jesus offers us.

As Spiritual Director of the Medjugorje Network in this country I am anxious to play my part in extending the Kingdom of God on earth. If there is any way in which I might be able to assist your centres or prayer groups, then I will be pleased to hear from you and I will certainly do what I can. It has always been a great encouragement to me to see so many good people living lives close to God and witnessing to God’s love. We all need each other.

In conclusion what we all have to remember and live each day is this:

Spin carefully,
Spin prayerfully,
Leaving the thread with God.

Mary, Queen of Peace, pray for us and protect us.’
